Description: Part-Time Front End Developer Instructor

The Harlem Business Alliance, a 501©3 non-profit, is seeking an experienced coding instructor for our Disrupt Harlem Code Squad (DHCS). DHCS is a free coding and entrepreneurship program located in Harlem and offered to young adults between the ages of 18-24. This program connects its students to the tech industry offers an introduction to the jobs in the tech world. Students will learn how to not only code and build a business, but will also meet with tech-entrepreneurs, founders, and young professionals during mentor lunches and group trips.

Over the course of 16 weeks, the coding instructor is expected to provide hands-on lessons and guidance for a group of up to 15 young adults. The teaching schedule will include approximately of 10 hours of in-class instruction each week. Project based work and assignments are recommended.

The majority of students will have little to no prior experience with coding – the curriculum should include basic instruction of common coding languages, HTML/CSS and JavaScript. Students should also be exposed to the basics of UX/UI and Bootstrap for web development.

During this program, students will also receive lessons in entrepreneurship. The coding instructor is expected to work in conjunction with the business instructor to assist the students in implementing his or her business idea in the form of a website or mobile application.

The culmination of the Disrupt Harlem Code Squad is a demo day, during which the students present their final projects in the form of a website or mobile application. The successful candidate is expected to develop and implement a curriculum designed to teach students sufficient basic skills to meet the expectations of demo day.

Qualification Requirements:

Qualified candidates must have a minimum of 1 years as a front-end developer (HTML, CSS and JavaScript).

  • Expert Knowledge of HTML
  • Expert Knowledge of CSS
  • Expert Knowledge of JavaScript
  • Expert Knowledge of Using Bootstrap Templates
  • Previous teaching experience, particularly with young adults
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of 4 months of teaching

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of React
  • Previous teaching experience with low income and young adult populations
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, and communication skills
  • Willingness to assist students outside of class as necessary
